St.Thomas - Havensight Pier

* St Thomas, USVI WICO Pier 12-22-09

So Shore Excursions can have a little fun right? Of course, we are not making fun of the fact one of our guests had to ride this today. She was conscious and I hope she will be well. The pier has no shade and was very hot. So important tip for anyone on a cruise going to St. Thomas to show up for your tour at the meeting time or only 5-10 mins before departure time. That way you are not waiting too long in the hot sun. Weather was excellent today and the team got together for some "refreshments" at Mojo's on the pier. Stay tuned for the further adventures...

Christmas Cruise - NCL Pearl Dec. 21st

* Thanks to Mike Coleman @ cruisenewsweekly.com for the photo

First port to the holiday cruise onboard the Norwegian Pearl finished today in Samana, Dominican Republic. The shortest day of the year started out great with partly cloudy skies that opened up to a beautiful day. We had guests out at Cayo Levantado, Caves & Mangroves by speedboat, ATVS, Jeeps and more (just to name a few). Quick advise, if you cruise to Samana, either book a ship sponsored tour or stay onboard. Trying to get around independently is difficult and the condition of the roads and town, may keep most cruise guests from enjoying the experience. By no means did today feel short, as we weighed anchored at 6:00pm sailing for St. Thomas, USVI.

Samana, Dom. Republic Dec. 7th, 2009

While the Shore Excursion team was learning merengue/salsa at Cayenas Del Mar in Samana. Some of the other crew went over to our other beach escape island, Cayo Levantado to offer a hand distributing Christmas gifts to the less fortunate of Samana. NCL and other cruise lines all over the world this month will be donating their time and gifts to those in need during this holiday season. Kudos to the Norwegian Pearl crew and especially Staff Captain, Mattias Andersson, who endured a pretty hot, humid day as Santa himself.

St Thomas, USVI- Another unique experience...Ondeck Sailing Adventure

The weather in St. Thomas was exceptional for our next adventure. Hot, sunny but windy. All the great elements for sailing. But this is not just sailing and letting the crew do the work. This is the Ondeck Sailing Adventure. Going with teams of 6 or less, your adventure starts with basic sailing lessons, i.e. tacking efficiently to increase speed. The 2 person crew on these Farr 40s can operate the boats without help but that is not the point. Your team joins the crew in the race, as once you get some tacking practice the boat positions for the start. Then heads on to a buoy to buoy race! Afterwards, you head in and have some rum punch and check out the pictures the crew take during the tour. Great fun! We took the team out and raced against each other plus a boat with guests from Carnival. Great time all around, unique tour and a must do in St. Thomas.

Samana - Cayenas Del Mar

Great day in Dom. Republic. I decided to surprise the team and go to the beach and have lunch. Not very exciting, except I didnt tell them we were going to have a private merengue lesson! Whole lot of fun. So all in all a great day, great food and nice beach. Next time your in Samana, Dom. Republic head over to Cayenas Del Mar!

Holidays on the High Seas

Many of my friends and family ask me about how crew onboard handle holidays. Most of us are away from parents, spouses, kids and good friends. All but a few first time crew members are prone to being homesick, missing the normal holiday routine. Thanksgiving with family, shopping on Black Friday then getting the home decorated with the preparations ending with the tree up, decorated plus mom starting up the baked goodness, cookies, fruitcake, cheesecake (yes cheesecake) and other hometime holiday necessities. When I was younger I could not eat my mom's fruitcake, not sure why so I was happy to give them to the other family members' as gifts. They like them I guess. Over the years as I grew older (as well as my cousins), the family Christmas Party lost its luster...we didnt get any gifts and just sat around and talked about college, then jobs and eventually now being married with or without kids. However, my father throughout the years never lost that luster. Every Christmas Eve he read to all the kids, "Twas the Night Before Christmas" with the same passion when my sister and I were that age. As goofy as he sounds when he reads it, it still warms my heart every year I think about it. When he reads, ..."with a twinkle in his eye and nose like cherry", my father still as that twinkle. Maybe it was the Christmas lights reflecting off from his glasses...who knows. I have been working at sea for nearly 8 years. I have made it to my parents annual Holiday Hoedown only twice in those 8 years. Once, after my first contract, then about 2 years ago as the schedule for vacation matched the holidays. My mother had to have minor surgery, so it was up to me to prepare and cook the Christmas Eve spread. The family comes far and wide to hunker down on this holiday home goodness. Every year we think we make enough and every year we run out of food. Nowadays, we had to plan back up appetizers and courses to forever feed the fam. I guess only once a year, right? I loved it. So I digress...holiday at sea for me sometimes just go like the days. One day you step on the ship and the next Christmas Day just ended. Whoosh...but I will tell you onboard the crew activities and shipboard management do their best to help everyone from over 50 different countries, religions and cultures celebrate the holidays. Crew members away from home still are able to celebrate the holidays just as anyone else (minus the family and friends at home). But onboard the ship, we are family. We celebrate the holidays together as a family.

So with this I will tell you...if you cruise during the holidays and many of you will, then give the crew a bit of a break. We will give 110% each and every cruise holiday or not. We all know you spend your hard earned money to cruise on your holiday and you want it to be perfect. It may not be but I am damn sure that crew onboard will NOT go out of their way to ruin it, as much as you hear in some of the not-so-positive reviews and blogs about cruises. Although it is summer in the Caribbean, doesn't mean Mother Nature can refrain from throwing tropical storms and such at the islands. For guests in the northern climates, enjoy the fact you don't have to shovel snow. For those who don't worry about snow, enjoy the fact you don't have to pick up after your family at the annual holiday get together. God forbid you end up in a port and the sun doesnt shine (though its still 80 plus degrees). Whether guests and crew members, we are all humans and we all inhabit the same earth, the crew may be from a different country or even religion than you but they know what the holiday means to you. And believe me, we want you to have the holiday experience of a lifetime at sea.

Tortola Surf Adventure - shhh please keep it quiet

So we decided to head to Josiah Bay, or J Bay, and found a wicked little beach with little to no other people. Our Landrover Jeep Tour goes here and that is about it. Nice surf spot if the swell and winds are right. Today was tight for longboard action but a few 6 footers came in so the short boarders had some action. Found I am way out of shape for surfing so we are looking to repeat visit to get back into it. Board rental is $10 an hour or $25 for 3 hours (best deal). $10 per person taxi each way. Food and service is really, really slow so maybe brown bag your snacks and booze for a budget stop. Otherwise like any other beach in Tortola...taxi ride, drinks and food adds up fast! If you want it all together take a tour if not...do it this way.

St Thomas - Another great day

Hey boys and girls...so pretty awesome day as I hung out with other Shore Excursion Teams from Costa Atlantico and Carnival Liberty at our tour operators house high above St. Thomas. Its not a tour...but a perk. Lost my ass at tennis but going for rematch soon with those guys. Hey, who said our job was easy!
